Lunch in the ‘Hood

March 14, 2009

The other day, Xavier and I decided to try a little place around the corner that we’ve passed by dozens of times, Le Spontini, a casual little bistro with 12 euro menus at lunchtime.

As often happens, though, what we wanted to try wasn’t on the inexpensive menu, and we couldn’t resist ordering their old-school take of escargots and girolles, simply cooked in loads of butter, garlic and fresh parsley.

Yum.

Then, we split an enormous pot of cassoulet, the hearty one-pot dish from the Southwest of France with white beans, duck confit, ham and sausage…

…and soaked up every bit of it with the warm, crusty bread that came with the meal.

It’s not fancy; in fact, the place was mostly filled with workers from a nearby construction site, along with neighborhood locals, sipping the house red and eating steak frites, or the tuna, prepared my favorite way, a la plancha (on a hot, flat-top grill), which is typically Basque.

We’re going back.
