Le Relais Gascon

Under this heap of garlicky potatoes, fried until perfectly crisp, is lettuce…along with a couple of thick discs of melty goat cheese on a baguette, and a ton of bacon.

This is the gi-normous salad that I ordered the other night at Le Relais Gascon in Montmartre with my friend from Los Angeles, the poet Suzanne Allen, who introduced me to this place about a year ago. We’ve been meeting here as often as we can since then, and it’s a perfect meeting spot for us, about halfway between her place near Notre Dame, and mine, over in the 16th.

And it’s super-cheap — just 12 euros.

It is the Super Big Gulp of salads, and although I always look at it and think, “Oh, I’ll never be able to eat all of this,” I always do.
